Behind the Scenes of Your Favourite Family Destination: Exclusive with Seamus from Mountpanther Farm Park

Located in the beautiful countryside of Northern Ireland, Mountpanther Farm Park has become one of the top family day out NI destinations since its opening in 2017. Known for its stunning landscapes, hands-on animal interactions, and unique attractions like the Deer Safari, it offers an experience that blends education, entertainment, and nature.

Recently, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Seamus, the founder behind Mountpanther’s ongoing success, to discuss the farm park’s evolution, challenges, and future. Read on for exclusive insights into the journey of this much-loved family and group destination.

Firstly, Seamus, how has Mountpanther Farm Park evolved since its establishment in 2017?

Seamus starts from the Mountpanther Farm Park establishment, “Since our opening in 2017, Mountpanther Farm Park has gone through significant growth and transformation.”

“When we first started, our primary focus was to create a welcoming environment where families and groups could enjoy a day out,” Seamus explains.

Seamus emphasises the importance of building a place that wasn’t just fun but also educational and meaningful. “We wanted people to not just see animals but also learn about their behaviours, habitats, and conservation efforts,” he continues. “One of our major additions has been the Deer Safari, which allows visitors to immerse themselves in nature and interact with deer which will give them a close and educational experience.”

What strategies have you implemented to ensure a diverse range of animals from around the globe?

While answering this, Seamus implied that the farm park is very intentional about the animals they bring into the park. “Our first consideration is ensuring that any species we introduce can thrive in Northern Ireland’s climate,” he notes. Seamus said the reason is because this is crucial for the animals’ health and well-being.

“Before introducing any new species, we conduct thorough research to understand their specific needs, behaviours, and how we can care for them effectively,” he added.

“Our team is constantly learning about animal welfare and conservation, which helps us make informed decisions about which animals we bring in as we want our visitors to have a meaningful encounter with these animals.”

Can you elaborate on the park’s most popular attractions and activities?

To begin with, Seamus said Mountpanther Farm Park’s attractions are designed to cater to different interests and age groups. “The petting barn is incredibly popular, especially with young children who love interacting with our friendly goats, rabbits, and other small animals- it’s a hands-on experience that really connects children to the animals,” Seamus added.

Seamus also highlights the reptile room. “It offers a rare opportunity for visitors to see fascinating reptiles up close, which can be an exciting and educational experience for people who might not usually have the chance to see these creatures in person.”

“There’s also the Deer Safari- our signature experience,” Seamus added. “Visitors take guided tours through beautiful landscapes, learning about deer behaviour and their role in ecosystems.”

How do you manage the balance between entertainment and animal welfare?

“Balancing entertainment with animal welfare is at the core of what we do,” Seamus stated. “We’ve established strict guidelines to ensure that all animal interactions prioritise their well-being. Our staff undergo extensive training in animal behaviour and care, and they closely monitor interactions to ensure that the animals are never overstressed or overhandled,” Seamus explained.

Seamus also points out that while they want their visitors to have enjoyable experiences, the health and happiness of their animals always come first. “By prioritising animal welfare, we believe we’re able to create a more meaningful experience for our visitors as well,” he stated. Seamus explains the reason for this is “If people see that the animals are well cared for, they’re more likely to develop empathy and a deeper appreciation for wildlife.”

Getting more detailed to everyone’s favourite activity, what inspired the creation of the exclusive Deer Safari experience?

“The Deer Safari was inspired by our desire to create an immersive experience that went beyond simply observing animals from a distance,” Seamus explained. “We wanted our visitors to be able to engage with nature on a deeper level, to see animals in a more natural habitat, and to learn about their behaviours and conservation.”

Seamus stresses that the idea was also to offer something unique that would set Mountpanther Farm Park apart from other attractions in the area. “The Deer Safari has become one of the park’s highlights, providing visitors with an opportunity to see these magnificent creatures up close while also learning about their important role in the ecosystem.”

Getting deeper into education, how do the hands-on animal interactions at farm park contribute to children’s understanding of empathy and responsibility?

“At Mountpanther, we believe that direct interactions with animals are important in teaching children empathy and responsibility,” Seamus began. “When kids have the chance to pet, feed, and observe animals up close, they naturally begin to understand these creatures as living beings with needs and feelings.”

One example in the farm park is through the petting barn, for instance. “Children learn to approach animals gently and to pay attention to their body language,” Seamus explains.  “This fosters empathy as they start to recognise that animals, much like humans, have emotions and preferences.”

“We also guide them on how to properly feed and care for the animals, which helps build a sense of responsibility,” Seamus implies. These lessons often stay with them, encouraging them to be more caring toward pets at home or developing a broader concern for wildlife conservation.

How do you maintain the park’s appeal for different age groups?

To address this, Seamus highlights their overall goal is to create an inclusive environment where there’s something for everyone. “For younger children, the hands-on animal interactions and adventure play zones are key attractions while older children tend to appreciate more interactive challenges, like our scavenger hunts or educational talks on wildlife conservation.”

“We also regularly update our seasonal events, such as our Halloween Pumpkin Patch in October, to keep things fresh for returning visitors.” Seamus added. “By adjusting the events with visitor demographics and constantly evolving our offerings, we ensure that Mountpanther Farm Park remains a place where everyone, from toddlers to teenagers, can have a great time.”

Next up, how do you ensure the park remains an affordable option for families?

“We offer various ticket options, including family passes, which provide significant savings compared to individual ticket purchases,” says Seamus. “We also keep our food prices reasonable within the park, so families don’t feel pressured to overspend during their visit,” he continues.

Seamus also added, “we have picnic areas where visitors can bring their own food if they prefer, which makes it easier for everyone to enjoy a day out without breaking the bank.”

What special events or themed activities does the park offer throughout the year?

“Oh this is exciting,” Seamus laughs.

“Throughout the year, we host a variety of seasonal events. Our Easter egg hunts are a big hit in the spring, and in October, we have the Halloween Pumpkin Fest, which features spooky trails, pumpkin picking, and family-friendly Halloween activities.”

“During the winter, we transform the park into a winter wonderland, complete with festive decorations, holiday-themed activities, and visits from Santa Claus,” he added.

What’s New for This Year’s Halloween Pumpkin Fest compared to previous years?

“This year, we’re taking the Halloween Pumpkin Fest to the next level,” Seamus explained. “Visitors can expect a larger pumpkin patch where they can pick their own pumpkins, with staff on hand to help carve designs.”

The fun doesn’t stop here. “We’re also expanding our spooky trails with more interactive elements, like meet-and-greets with our friendly Halloween characters.”

“There will be a fancy dress competition with exciting prizes and exclusive Mountpanther merchandise up for grabs. Overall, we’re adding more activities and surprises to make this year’s event even more fun for families.” he added.

How do you ensure that the Halloween event remains family-friendly while still providing a spooky atmosphere?

Seamus highlights although they embrace the spooky spirit of Halloween, they always keep things family-friendly.

“Decorations are whimsical rather than frightening, and the activities are designed to be creative and engaging rather than scary,” he stated.

“Our goal is to make sure that families with children of all ages feel comfortable and have a fun, memorable experience.”

Lastly, how do you plan to engage with the local community and attract more visitors to the Halloween event?

“We’re always looking for ways to strengthen our connection with the local community.” Seamus notes.

To emphasise his previous answer, Seamus stated that they have launched social media campaigns and are releasing blogs to highlight Mountpanther’s upcoming events, including Halloween Pumpkin Fest.

“We believe that by staying engaged with our neighbours and offering fun, family-friendly events, we’ll continue to attract visitors not just from nearby cities but from all over Northern Ireland.” he added.
